Sardo – Vargiu

Verses of Francesca da Rimini translated into Sardinian by Salvatore Vargiu

Salvatore Vargiu (Sardinian name Sarbadori), translated some cantos of Dante’s Hell (included the verses of Paolo and Francesca) into the Campidano variant of the Sardinian language, spoken at Cagliari and in the southern part of the island.  Vargiu is a Sardinian dramatist, director of the Cooperativa Teatro Olata, a theatre company created in 1983 in the Cagliari suburb of Quartucciu.  Dante’s verses in Sardinian are the heart of the drama “Su Inferru” (“The Hell”), presented at Cagliari in 2012.  See the playbill at the bottom of this page.

Verses of Francesca da Rimini translated into Sardinian (Campidanese) by Salvatore Vargiu
Inferno, Canto V, 88-142

Anima gratziosa, bonu coru
po tenn’asseliu cun is fradis sus.
Amori, lestru in coru amurosu
a custu iat pigau de sa personi
bella, ki m’esti stetia leada,
Amori, ki’ a nemus-u pèrdonat,
sendessiri amau, de dep’ amai,
de-i custu mi pigat tanti forti,
ki, gei ddu bis, ancora no mi lassat.
S’amori s’iat portau a una morti:
Caina abetat ki’ s’at stùdau”.
Custus fueddus issus s’ant ofertu.
lntendiu is duas animas ofendias,
calu sa faci e tant’ abarru seriu,
finsas ki su Poeta mi nat: “Ita pensas?”
Arrespundu, e cumintzu: “Ohi amomia,
cantu bellus pensais e cantu brama
ddus iat portaus a dolorosu passu!”.
Insar’ a issus castiu e ddus preguntu:
“Hoi! Francisca, is martirius tus
lagrimai mi fainti piedosu.
Ma nara: a s’ora de is durcis suspirus,
a ita e cumenti cuntzedit amori
ki connoscestis dubius e disijus?”
Issa mi na’: “No nc’at dolori rnannu
ke s’amentai de su tempus diçosu
in sa miseria; ge ddu scit Virgiliu.
Ma si connosci s’arrexini prima
de cust’amori nostu tenis brama,
naru cument’ e kini nat e prangit.
Ligemus una dì aici po svagu
de Lancialottu de amori costrintu;
solus femus e sena de suspetu.
Tanti bortas is ogus s’at ispintu
sa ligidura, e scoloriu cara;
sceti ‘nu puntu fut ki s’iat bintu.
Candu ligeus de su bramau arrisu
benni basau de unu tant’ amanti,
custu, ki mai de mai fiat transiu,
sa buca m’iat basau totu tremendi.
Galiotu libru’ e kini dd’at iscritu:
e sa dì prus no ddui sigheus a ligi”.
Mentras unu de issus nat aici,
s’atru prangiat, ki de piedadi
bengu de mancu cumente po morri.
E seu arrutu ke unu corpus mortu.
